A distorted sound question

I have a sound problem that has just recently become an issue.
And yes marti I went against my own better judgement and your advice (that was appreciated by the way)and went with the word of a rep. from my computers builder.
So, burp! that was a crow sandwich with a side order of humble pie.
But what the hell I got to laser beam a palm tree.
On to business.
I am having sound file problems much like generation loss with a vhs signal. This is occurring with all forms of input. I have some ideas but want other opinions and or stories.

You could
-Use CoolEdit Pro (or something similar) to filter out the noise, and polish up the signal.
-Feed the sound directly from the video into your sound card.
-When laying down the sound track take the volume to about half, this takes out some of the noise.
-Tweak your recording settings.

Id like to know a good answer to this myself.

Thank you for your prompt reply.
turning down the volume on an external device (Tape player, Music Keyboard) I learned the hard way. I have also found something to the effect that plugging two mono input devices through a y connector can cause something like an overload distortion.
Your other three ideas I will have to try (more notepads and crayons are in Ralphs future you bet'cha)_
In fact I downloaded some programs like the one you mentioned, just haven't had a chance to test them
I ran a search for "free sound eqpt downloads" or some such.
As I mentioned before this was the strangest thing and as best as I can describe it acts like generation loss on VHS.
? Compression
? Low system percentages
? The need for a download or patch
Playthrough when recording is perfect but that doesn't mean much to me because as with the external volume idea (I) can not detect a problem until play back. I tried to download a scope but it didn't take.
